22 ’90s Outfits That Are Still Worth Copying Today

Despite younger generations now referring to the ’90s as “the olden days,” the clothes we wore during the era of Lunchables, Furbies, and TGIF TV shows continue to resurface. Yes, ’90s fashion is in, with items like duster coats, pencil skirts, and bucket hats finding their way back into our closets.

Today’s celebrities love a good throwback look (Hailey Bieber, for instance, has helped revive items like oversized shorts and micro tanks), but rather than take inspiration from this group of style icons, we’re turning to the decade’s own group of “It” girls for everyday ’90s outfit ideas. From Gwyneth Paltrow’s leather pants to Janet Jackson’s overalls, check out all the ’90s fashion you can (and should) wear today, ahead.

Chunky Knits

Chilly weather often calls for cozy, chunky knits. If you’re wondering how to make that oversized sweater look cute, take a tip from Cameron Diaz and pair it with a simple skirt.

Basics don’t have to be boring. Halle Berry proved this decades ago by leaving her collared shirt unbuttoned at the bottom and adding boots to her timeless skirt suit.

Courtney Cox is the epitome of understated beauty. Here, she proves that going casual is cool. With just a few wardrobe staples—a black turtleneck, straight-leg jeans, belt, and sleek black boots—you’ve got an outfit that works just as well in 1995 as it does today.

Tube Top and Duster

A tube top, a duster, and a pair of black pants? We could easily picture Bella Hadid stepping out in a similar Kate Hudson-inspired ensemble today.

Oversized Coat and Tall Boots

Today, this baggy top, form-fitting bottom pairing is known as “jellyfishing,” but Brandy was pulling it off long before the combination had a cutesy name.

Leather Trousers

TBH, we’d still wear most of Gwyneth Paltrow’s ’90s outfits (her wardrobe from that decade was pure perfection), but we’re especially partial to leather pants. She styled them with a long-sleeved tee for a Giorgio Armani party in 1996.

Matching Set

We’re big fans of pre-made sets and can’t resist a fuzzy-trimmed cardigan atop a halter dress. Jennifer Lopez, it’s time to repeat this 1998 red carpet confection.

T-Shirt and Slip Skirt

For a decent portion of the ’90s, fashion felt easy yet elevated. Case in point: Claire Danes’s versatile T-shirt and silk skirt, which could be dressed up with strappy heels or kept casual with sneakers.

A little black dress will forever be a closet staple, but spaghetti straps give it a ’90s nod. When putting together your LBD outfit, channel Jennifer Aniston’s 1997 style by keeping your accessories minimal and finishing your look with strappy heels.

Shiny Statement Coat

There’s a lot to love about Mary J. Blige’s ’90s outfit, from her shiny jacket to those oversized shades. However, we’re also fans of a single color scheme (in the trending color purple) and are now inspired to work even more monochromatic outfits into our rotation.

Distressed Leather Jacket

Distressed leather jackets were a ’90s alternative era favorite, and this too-cool outfit worn by Winona Ryder is one that lives on in fashion history. Today, the layer is even more versatile and comes in many shapes and sizes (moto, blazers, oversized, etc.), instantly adding oomph to whatever’s underneath.

On days when you can’t decide between comfort and fashion, channel Aaliyah and do both. The late singer took the stage at KMEL’s All Star Jam in 1997 wearing an oversized tracksuit but also nailed the “flossing” trend by styling a strappy bralette top underneath.

Cargo Pants and Bucket Hat

Britney Spears’s bucket hat may be controversial (not everyone’s a fan of that style), but we’d wear those cargo pants in a heartbeat. Plus, her pink tee is a subtle way of pulling off Barbiecore.

Overalls

If you’re still wondering how to wear overalls, Janet Jackson’s 1994 MTV Video Music Awards outfit is the perfect source of inspiration. She gave her own baggy pair a laid-back, sporty twist by adding a cap and chunky shoes.

Floral Dress and White Sandals

Katherine Heigl’s floral dress and white sandals would still make for a cute summer outfit, and it doesn’t hurt that the combo reminds us of what she wore in the cult-favorite ’90s movie, Wish Upon a Star.

T-Shirt and Blazer

It’s no surprise that Julia Roberts’s classic ’90s outfits are still being recreated by models such as Emily Ratajkowski. We’re especially fond of this casual jeans and T-shirt look, which was instantly pulled together with the addition of a structured blazer.

Off-the-Shoulder Dress

Between that off-the-shoulder neckline, sheer sleeves, and drop earrings, it’s safe to say Mariah Carey provided us with the perfect cocktail attire wedding guest inspo years ago.

Halter Dress

Although Salma Hayek wore this white halter dress on a red carpet in 1997, we’ve seen plenty of modern-day dupes that are made from cotton and fit for a sexy summer night.

Oversized Cardigan and Trousers

Is this Meg Ryan or Kendall Jenner? Considering how much the model loves a loose pair of trousers, we could easily picture her wearing this exact style while out and about.

Crop Top and Cutoff Jeans

Once summer rolls around, out come our trusty jean shorts. It’s the ease that ensures this bottom remains timeless; all you need is a casual tee—or crop top, in Cindy Crawford’s case—before finishing off the look with your favorite pair of sneakers.

Bra Top and Wide-Leg Pants

We’re not above coordinating with our pals, just as TLC did in 1996. But even if we’re headed out solo, we’d still be down to copy these all-white outfits, consisting of bra tops, wide-leg pants, and matching duster jackets.

Sports Jersey and Bike Shorts

Pamela Anderson’s ’90s style will forever be on our mood board. This athleisure look solves a variety of our warm-weather fashion dilemmas, whether you’re searching for ways to wear bike shorts or wondering how to style a sports jersey.
