Electronic Arts is shutting down Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth and three other games later today, May 24. All of EA‘s titles that are about to be discontinued are mobile games.

The California-based publisher has been shutting down its live-service releases at an aggressive pace since the turn of the year; seven EA games have been discontinued in late March 2024, followed by another two in April. Many of those were older releases, including a handful of Codemasters’ F1 games, the oldest of which was pushing 13 by the time its servers were taken offline at the beginning of spring.

Four Gamers are Still Online on Wii U Servers Nearly 40 Days After Shutting Down

Four gamers are still playing online on Nintendo’s Wii U servers nearly 40 days after the company decided to shut them down.

But the May 24 wave of shutdowns will break with that pattern, as most of the games it includes are relatively recent releases. The titles in question are F1 Mobile Racing, Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, MLB Tap Sports Baseball 2022, and MLB Tap Sports Baseball 2023. Aside from F1 Mobile Racing, all of these games are at most two years old. The shutdown of the LotR collectible RPG appears to be particularly hasty, as it’s barely been a year since Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth debuted on Android and iOS devices.

These four EA game shutdowns were all confirmed by early May 2024. The discontinuations of the two MLB Tap Sports Baseball titles were announced in February, when the publisher also removed all in-app purchases from them, a standard practice for live-service games that find themselves on the chopping block. A 2024 installment in Glu Mobile’s popular series hasn’t yet been announced. Given how the franchise historically received new annual entries in March, some fans are now speculating that MLB Tap Sports Baseball has been shelved indefinitely.

At Least 4 More EA Games Are Shutting Down This Year

Whatever the case may be, what’s certain is that this won’t be the last of EA game shutdowns in 2024. The publisher has already confirmed plans to discontinue four additional titles by year’s end, starting with Super Mega Baseball 2 on July 24. Turn-based RPG Disney Sorcerers Arena is then set to follow a week later, having already been pulled from mobile app stores, although its servers remain operational. EA then plans to discontinue NHL 20‘s multiplayer functionality on September 16, whereas FIFA 22 will receive the same treatment on November 4.

Assuming no additional discontinuations take place, EA will have shut down 17 games in 2024. There is currently no indication that the developers behind the newly shuttered titles are at risk of closure, with all of them currently working on new projects, in addition to supporting existing titles.
