CBS Sports ranks the top coaches in the Big Ten

The season is close, and with that many outlets are rankings players and coaches as well.

The Big Ten has drastically changed with the addition of new teams, which means there is new blood among the coaching ranks. With that, CBS Sports has ranked each of the team’s head coaches.

Obviously some of the names will be familiar, but with the new blood there is some shakeup at the top of the list. Check out below where CBS ranked Ohio State’s Ryan Day each of the other Big Ten’s head coaches, starting from the bottom.

The former Bruins running back takes over the program after Chip Kelly left for Ohio State. It’s his first season as a head coach.

Walters is entering his second season with the Boilermakers, after going 4-8 in his first season.

Entering his second season with the Wildcats, Braun went a surprising 8-5 in his first season.

The Wolverines head coach is entering his first season after Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL.

Cignetti is entering his first season with the Hoosiers after going 119-35 with IUP, Elon, and James Madison.

Locksley has been with the Terrapins for what will be his sixth season, going 28-33 in his second stint as their head coach. His overall record is 31-59.

Also in his second stint, Schiano has gone 19-28 since 2020. His overall record with the Scarlet Knights is 87-95.

After being at Western Michigan for 4 seasons, Fleck took over the Gophers program in 2017. He’s gone 50-34 in his tenure.

After leading Wisconsin for 7 seasons, and Arkansas for 5, Bielema took over the Fighting Illini program in 2021. He’s gone 18-19 in three years, and has a 115-77 overall coaching record.

This will be Fisch’s first season with the Huskies, after going 17-22 with Arizona and a brief stint with UCLA.

Rhule will enter his second season with the Cornhuskers, going 5-7 in year one. His overall collegiate record is 52-50 while going 11-27 in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers.

Smith will begin his Spartan’s head coaching career this season after previously being at Oregon State where he compiled a 34-35 record.

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz discusses Ohio State, offensive failure

A stalwart of the Big Ten, Ferentz has been with the Hawkeyes since 1999, making him the longest tenured head coach in the country. He’s gone 196-119 with Iowa and 208-140 overall in his coaching career.

The former Buckeyes linebacker is entering his second full season with the Badgers. He’s gone 8-6 in Madison and 71-31 overall after stops at Ohio State (interim) and Cincinnati.

Franklin has been leading the Nittany Lions since 2014 and has compiled a 88-39 record. Overall after a 3-year stop at Vanderbilt, he has a 112-54 overall head coaching record.

A new face in the conference, Riley is entering his third season with the Trojans. He’s gone 19-8 and with 5 years at Oklahoma, his overall coaching record is 74-18.

Another new face, Lanning has been with the Ducks since 2022. He’s gone 22-5 after being a position coach prior to landing in Eugene.

The Buckeyes head coach is entering his fifth full season as their leader. He’s gone 56-8 during his time in Columbus.
