A while ago, UK tabloids were abuzz with claims of an expat Canadian family having taken a photo of the elusive Loch Ness monster while vacationing in Scotland. Parry Malm and Shannon Wiseman, who were travelling with their kids, shared a picture of a creature they saw in the Scottish Highlands. While they weren’t fully convinced themselves, their kids are sure it is Nessie. Parry submitted the images to the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register which has registered it as the first official sighting on Loch Ness in 2024.

Was It Really “Nessie”?

While there is no way to verify the claims of this Scottish lore, the Loch Ness is a vast freshwater lake, and grainy photos or videos often leave much to the imagination. The area has been rife with stories about sightings of an unexplained creature in Loch Ness. However, the first sighting in modern memory dates back to 1933, when a couple claimed to have seen an enormous animal in the Loch.

The monster is described to be a large animal with an elongated neck and humps on its back. But without clear, detailed images, it’s nearly impossible to definitively identify any object in the murky depths of Loch Ness. Logs, large fish, or even wind-whipped waves can be misconstrued as a monster.

Additionally, University of Otago geneticist Neil Gemmell and a global team of researchers, who tested DNA from hundreds of water samples from Loch Ness, believe the said “monster” might really be an eel. And a massive search for the Loch Ness Monster, organised by Loch Ness Centre and Loch Ness Exploration (LNE), an independent and voluntary research team, also did not reveal any conclusive evidence of the mythical creature.

So, what’s the verdict? The British family’s photo, like countless others, remains unverified. Nessie continues to be a mystery, and while the possibility of a prehistoric creature lurking in the loch is alluring, concrete evidence is lacking.
