The Deputy Minister of Ministry of Communication, Teo Nie Ching has outlined plans to enhance 5G coverage in Malaysia, especially targeting rural areas.
In response to a question from Hassan Saad (PN-Baling) regarding the expansion of 5G infrastructure, Teo Nie Ching provided an update on the current state of 5G deployment.
As of May 31, 2024, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has successfully completed 7,114 5G sites, achieving 81.7% coverage in populated areas across the country.
In Kedah, 379 out of 385 planned 5G sites are operational, providing 80.1% coverage in the state’s populated regions.

The current 5G rollout is concentrated in urban areas with high economic activity.
However, the Nie Ching confirmed that efforts to extend coverage to rural and less populated regions have begun and will continue progressively.
She assured that expanding 5G infrastructure to rural areas remains a priority as part of the government’s commitment to improving internet access nationwide.
