One of the TikTok’s biggest scandals is resurfacing — in an epic tale of social media, swinging (yes, that kind) and … the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

Hulu’s new reality show “The Secret Lives of Mormon” premieres Friday, Sept. 6, offering an inside look into the lives of Mormon mothers a part of the app’s “MomTok” community.

Comprised of eight influencers living in and around Utah’s Salt Lake City, the show delves into how the video sharing platform changed their lives and how the Church has responded to their videos, as well as the sex scandal that took the app by storm in 2022. Whether you’re caught up on the lore or the term “#MomTok” has you scratching your head, here’s how you can watch the latest drama.

But first, is the term ‘Mormon’ actually used or preferred?

While the term “Mormon” is commonly used, it is not preferred by those actually practicing the religion. Back in 2018, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints penned a statement on how to properly address the church and its members.

“The Lord has impressed upon my mind the importance of the name He has revealed for His Church, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We have work before us to bring ourselves in harmony with His will. In recent weeks, various Church leaders and departments have initiated the necessary steps to do so,” LDS President Russell M. Nelson wrote.

According to its own style guide, here is what they recommend:

  • In the first reference, the full name of the Church is preferred: “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”
  • When a shortened reference is needed, the terms “the Church” or the “Church of Jesus Christ” are encouraged. The “restored Church of Jesus Christ” is also accurate.
  • When referring to Church members, the terms “members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” or “Latter-day Saints” are preferred. It asks that the term “Mormons” not be used.

Whether or not the term “Mormon” is offensive is still up for debate, even among the Church. The term originates from the “Book of Mormon,” sacred scripture published in 1830 by the religion’s founder, Joseph Smith.

What is ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ about?

According to USA TODAY, the series will cover the drama that largely kicked off in 2022, when hugely influential “Mom Tok” influencer Taylor Frankie Paul (who boasts more than 4 million followers on TikTok) told viewers that members of her tight-knit Mormon friend group had been “soft-swinging,” a practice where couples allegedly shared sexual partners but didn’t go “all the way.”

What ensued was calamity from all corners: partners breaking up or divorcing, people getting together, families dismantling, alliances switching, gossip videos and sordid details leaking.

Now, a group of these “#MomTok Mormon moms” are bringing the show from social media to the not-so-small screen with “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.”

“The scandalous world of a group of Mormon mom influencers implodes when they get caught in the midst of a swinging sex scandal that makes international headlines,” says Hulu’s own summary. “Now, their sisterhood is shook to its core. Faith, friendship and reputations are all on the line. Will #MomTok be able to survive and continue to give the rulebook a run for its money, or will this group fall apart?”
