Major tech outage for Microsoft users affects airlines, businesses around the world
Global tech outage disrupts airlines and businesses worldwide due to a CrowdStrike update, affecting Microsoft Windows systems.

The Massachusetts RMV is down this morning due to the the global tech outage impacting airports, banks and other businesses.
Because of the outage the RMV says the following services are unavailable.
- Service Center and AAA appointments are cancelled until 12:00pm
- Online credit card payments – payment by check can be accepted
- Vehicle inspections
- Limited capacity to accept phone calls in the RMV Contact Center
Road tests, suspension hearings and salvage inspections are still happening, according to the website. Updates will be posted to the RMV website as they have them.
What is causing the outage?
CrowdStrike, a U.S. firm that advertises being used by over half of Fortune 500 companies, said one of its recent content updates had a defect that impacted Microsoft’s Windows Operating System, adding the incident was “not a security incident or cyberattack.”
“The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed,” said a statement from CrowdStrike. The company’s CEO, George Kurtz, apologized for the disruptions in an interview with NBC’s Today. Microsoft, meanwhile, said “the underlying cause has been fixed,” but residual impacts will affect some of its Microsoft 365 apps and services.
Kurtz has apologized.
“We’re deeply sorry for the impact that we’ve cost to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this including our company,” Kurtz said in an interview on NBC’s Today.
