‘Moon’ movie coming to Opera House

“Fly Me to the Moon” shows Saturday and Tuesday at the Opera House.

The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with “Fly Me to the Moon.”

It will be screened on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Brought in to fix NASA’s public image, sparks fly in all directions as marketing maven Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) wreaks havoc on launch director Cole Davis’s (Channing Tatum) already difficult task. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as back-up and the countdown truly begins.

Financial Times calls the film “a tribute to the romcoms of a time before the phrase had been invented, the powder-pink era of Doris Day.” The Chicago Sun-Times says “with good old-fashioned, Grade A movie-star chemistry, ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ is a ‘go’ from the get-go.” Variety says the film is ” rigorously researched and ingeniously structured, using forgotten or little-publicized aspects of the (moon) mission in unexpected ways.” MovieMom calls it “sharp, witty, and wise.”

Rated PG-13 for some strong language and smoking, “Fly Me to the Moon” runs two hours, 12 minutes. Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.

The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. In addition, Opera House programming is made possible by the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County. The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … providing access to artistic diversity … and high-quality programming at an affordable price.” It is located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia.
