The 2024 Paris Olympics will be without one of the best athletes in the world: No. 1-ranked men’s tennis player Jannik Sinner. An untimely case of tonsillitis has forced Sinner to withdraw from competition in what would’ve been his first Olympic Games.

“After a good week of clay training I started to feel unwell,” Sinner stated in post on X, translated from Italian. “I spent a couple of days resting and during a visit the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing. Missing the Games is a huge disappointment as it was one of my main goals for this season. I couldn’t wait to have the honor of representing my country in this very important event.”

Sinner was one of the many top-ranked tennis players set to compete in men’s singles at the Olympic Games in Paris. World No. 2 Novak Djokovic is now the top-ranked player in men’s singles and will likely be given the top spot in the tournament draw. He’s ahead of Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz (No. 3), Alexander Zverev (No. 4), and Daniil Medvedev (No. 5), who beat Sinner in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 7-6 (6-4), 2-6, 6-3.

The official tournament draw for Olympic tennis men’s singles is tomorrow and the first round tips off on Saturday.

Sinner will miss the action in Paris but should be back on the court for the U.S. Open. That tournament starts Monday, Aug. 26.
