The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with “Treasure,” starring Stephen Fry and Lena Dunham. It will be screened on Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
A father-daughter road trip set in 1990s Poland, “Treasure” follows Ruth, a neurotic American music journalist, and her father, Edek, a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor, on a journey to his homeland. While Ruth is eager to make sense of her family’s past, Edek’s hesitation to confront it and his often odd demeanor cause more than just one dispute between the two. Based on the best-selling autobiographical novel “Too Many Men” by New York-based writer Lily Brett.
With a 91% Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score, critics praise the performance of the film’s two stars. The Edge Media Network says the film “is best when Fry is onscreen. He delivers a rich and refined turn as a man who would rather not confront his past.” The London Times says “Stephen Fry and Lena Dunham are the charismatic double act you never knew you needed.” The Third Coast Review says “I was never bored watching these two people looking for a home, both in Poland and within each other’s lives.” The Jerusalem Post calls it “a moving and often surprisingly funny character-driven story of intergenerational Holocaust trauma.” Rated R for language, “Treasure” runs one hour, 52 minutes.
Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.
