The American women are looking to end a gold medal drought in the uneven bars. Can they change that at the 2024 Paris Olympics?
A woman from the U.S. hasn’t topped the Olympic podium in the uneven bars in over four decades, with the last U.S. gold in the event coming in 1984, when Julianne McNamara tied for first place with China’s Ma Yanhong at the Los Angeles Games.
That doesn’t mean the Americans haven’t come close. Sunisa Lee, the Tokyo Olympics all-around champion, won a bronze medal in the uneven bars at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Madison Kocian earned silver at the 2016 Rio Games and Nastia Liukin took silver at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Nina Derwael is the reigning Olympic uneven bars champion. She became the first Belgian female gymnast to medal, picking up gold in Tokyo in 2021. American Sunisa Lee, the 2020 Olympic all-around champion, finished with a bronze medal. Here’s how the final uneven bars podium rounded out at the Tokyo Games:
